CLUB HISTORY
The Ipswich Jets proudly wear the famous green and white of Queensland’s oldest city, Ipswich and represent the blue-collar ethic of the great city.
The club has a developed a proud history in Rugby League since its entry into the competition in 1982. The district has generated many of Australia’s leading players with seven (7) local players picked in the Queensland Team of the Century.
Previously, we have seen the likes of Kevin and Kerrod Walters, and Allan Langer come through our ranks.
In recent years, our club has been coached by some of the greats of Rugby League including Tommy Raudonikus, Trevor Gillmeister, Kevin Walters, Darren Smith and Glenn Lazarus.
Ben Walker (Brisbane Bronco’s, Manly-Warringah, Northern Eagles, South Sydney Rabbitohs, London Broncos and Leeds Rhinos) Shane Walker (Brisbane Bronco’s and South Sydney) were both coached by the legendary Wayne Bennett and were in charge of the Jets Intrust cup team from 2011 to 2019 including the legendary wins of the Intrust Cup final and National Championship in 2015.
Since the appointment of current CEO Richard Hughes at the end of the 2018 season, the club’s professionalism has been driven to new levels in all it does. With record sponsorships and new initiatives, the club’s future is in a strong position.
The Jets have been blessed with the services of long-standing test and origin doctor Roy Saunders who in 2019 was inducted into the clubs Hall of Fame, along with tireless volunteer Dot Landy.
The Jets have strengthened their relationship with Rugby League Ipswich by branding the local junior representative teams “Jets” and providing a clear pathway from local league to Intrust Cup, while players become a part of the Jets system from 13 or 14 yrs of age.
Our 2 leading rugby league schools, Ipswich State High and St Peter Claver continue to develop their rugby league programs which not only fosters young talent to be future Jets but ensures these young players gain the best education possible.
In 2019 the Newcastle Knights formed a partnership with the Ipswich Jets to develop a pathway for young Queenslanders through the Ipswich Jets and into the NRL with the Newcastle Knights
The Newcastle Knights and the Ipswich Jets proudly represent heartlands of rugby league, and have been producing champions of the game since its inception and are proudly clubs that put a lot of effort into developing its players as people as they do as players.
Many Thanks to our Major Sponsor SAVIGE PEST CONTROL for their continued support this year and into the 2021 season.
