The Dolphins are waiting with one Grand Final spot and the winner of this Jets v Seagulls battle will take their spot with Redcliffe at Bishop Park on the 17 of September.

The Jets left it right to the end to beat the Panthers and proceed to week three of the BRL finals but they still got the job done.

This week is a Grand Final rematch against Wynnum for a spot in the Grand Final against Redcliffe.

Wynnum were given a thumping 51-16 loss, and the Jets beat the Panthers to be a step closer to earning the right to defend their title.

So far this year it is one all in the Seagulls v Jets. Jets’ coach Mark Bishop is looking for an improvement in communication this week particularly in defence.

This is the Grand Final re-match from last year which the Jets won 26-16. It was the Jets last year who had the week off.

Last year the teams clashed in the Qualifying Final and the Jets won 32-24. So there is plenty of recent history between these two great clubs.

JETS

Coach Mark Bishop was honest and up front about what needs to happen this week.

“We need to do the basics well. If they get on a roll with their hit up forwards they can be hard to stop.”

I asked if last year played a part this year “Last year doesn’t play too much of a part. We have a different squad so we are just letting the boys be excited about playing footy at this time of year.”

The Jets have a great outlook on their footy and how it should be played “Yes mate, play what’s in front and back our style of play. We know it works so back ourselves and concentrate on the job at hand; make tackles and catch the ball.”

WYNNUM

Wynnum are coming off a loss to the Dolphins but will be keen to make amends this week against their rivals the Ipswich Jets.

Wynnum have big forwards who are relentless through the middle; that’s where the Seagulls will try and win this finals’ battle.

Both teams are away from home so there is no advantage there.

The Seagulls have the BRL highest points scorer in Tyson Brookes with 84 goals in the regular season and nine tries with 204 points.

The Jets won’t want to give away easy points within range or it will cost them dearly.

Wynnum coach Ron Troutman still has faith in his side and after a great season, they are in a good the position to make another push this weekend.

“The Dolphins just did everything right on the day and now we just need to pick ourselves up and get ready to play,” Troutman said.

“We were not too bad with the ball last week, but we will need to have better line speed and just concentrate on those little things.”

This is an epic battle that decides who will meet Redcliffe next week. It’s contrasting narratives. The Seagulls are after redemption for losing the 2015 Grand Final, they’re the minor premiers and favourites. The Jets want to defend their title won last year and won’t die with footy in them this week.
