TOMORROW’S clash with Souths Logan is more than just another round of the Queensland Cup rugby league competition. It marks the annual Indigenous Appreciation round, which is particularly relevant to the Ipswich Jets, who boast a large number of Indigenous players. Jets players Billy McConnachie, Brandon McGrady, Marmin Barba, Wes Conlon, Kurtis Lingwoodock, Carlin Anderson and skipper Keiron Lander are among those at the club who proudly represent their Indigenous heritage. Magpies happy to avoid Barba juggernautThis weekend they will do so in Jets jerseys specially designed for the occasion and based on the artwork of Ipswich Indigenous artist Jahmayne Coolwell. When these two clubs clashed a month ago it was the Jets who got off to a great start leading 30-8 at half time before winning 50-20. However the Magpies are coming off a confidence-boosting win over Tweed Heads while the Jets are hurting from a defeat to Northern Pride. The Jets defensive workload of 335 tackles last weekend was their second most for the year, with both prop Rod Griffin and hooker Landon Hayes making 47 each. The Indigenous Appreciation Round also marks the start of NAIDOC Week. That will feature Indigenous dance groups, food and art, jumping castles as well as recruitment and information stalls from local business training providers. Tomorrow’s football program is a smoke and alcohol free day at the North Ipswich Reserve. GAME DAY Tomorrow at North Ipswich Reserve.
