Jets captain under injury cloud

Ipswich Jets co-coaches Ben and Shane Walker will have to wait until tomorrow morning to make a decision about whether captain Dane Phillips will play against the CQ Capras this weekend.

Co-coach Ben Walker said he would not risk the Jets playmaker if he wasn’t ready to play.

“At the moment he is probably a 50-50 chance but we don’t want to risk any further injury,” Walker said.

“He’s such a competitor that I know he will want to be there but if he’s not right then he’ll have to take the time off.”

The dynamic halfback scored a solo-effort try against the Blackhawks after suffering a knock to his left knee in the first half.

Phillips returned in the second half but with a heavily strapped leg and has been racing the clock to get back on his feet in time for round three.

Phillips remained hopeful of his chances to join his teammates for their first away game of the season.

“The pain is still going to be there but I’m better than I was earlier in the week,” he said. “It’s not the nicest but there’s no structural damage.”
